November 18, 2021 Bill spending News House vote

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told CNN the House would return at 8 a.m. ET on Friday.

Democrats had hoped to pass the legislation Thursday night, but House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has so far suspended action for more than three hours with a long speech denouncing Democrats in the House.

“He wants to do it in the middle of the night. We’re going to do it today, “Hoyer told CNN, referring to when McCarthy wants the bill passed.

Hoyer also told CNN he only knew of one Democratic defection, Jared Golden from Maine. Hoyer says they have the votes to pass the legislation.

Broad economic legislation of $ 1.9 trillion is a key pillar of Biden’s national agenda. It would respond to long-standing Democratic priorities by dramatically expanding social services for Americans, working to alleviate the climate crisis, improving access to health care, and providing support for families and children.

Once the bill passes through the House, it will face key hurdles in the Senate, with a looming struggle over a controversial tax provision and Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia still not on board.

CNN’s Clare Foran and Morgan Rimmer contributed to the reporting of this post.
